St. Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us. Barna Recycling will be collecting bins as normal this Friday the 17th March. Please make sure to put your bins out the night before as some areas may be serviced earlier than usual due to the St. Patrick’s Day parades.
A recent news report from RTÉ has indicated that 160 containers of recycling bin waste was returned to Ireland from Rotterdam last month. The waste was en route to paper mills in China but was sent back due to contamination. The waste was returned for containing a mix of paper, cardboard, plastic and other materials. The Department of Environment will be launching a public awareness campaign in the coming weeks to encourage further waste segregation.
In a recent article by the Farmers Journal, figures show we are generating over 1 million tonnes of food waste per year. The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten said that out of the 1 million tonnes of food waste produced in Ireland each year, 40% comes from food production, 34% from the commercial sector and 26% from households.
Illegal dumping continues to be a big issue in Ireland and according to the Irish Times, Minister for the Environment Denis Naughten said that illegal dumping “remains a problem effecting too many communities in Ireland”. The three R’s, ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle’ is an obvious solution to decrease the level of illegal dumping in our country.
Christmas is the most festive period of the year which means there is plenty of food, Christmas cards, decorations and wrapping paper bought every year. Unfortunately, most of this is wasted or not disposed of properly.
